Contest problems are designed so that 3-9 of them can be solved in a 5 hour period -- so about 1/2 an hour to 2 hours each. The form of input and output is clearly specified so programs either work, or they don't. They help develop sharp programming skills and an eye for problem solving. Some require an insight to solve, others are straightforward.
No. The problems involved can be used in a variety of practical situations. The skillset required are not only programming-based, but can be mathematically-based as well. Therefore, Math and Engineering students are also welcome to join.
Typically around 3 hours per week per practice. We run through the summer as well.
For the regionals, each team is to compete within their own region. Our region is East Central North America which mainly competes in Windsor University or McMaster University. For the World Finals, the contest location varies from year to year.
