Info for Current Grads
Research Network Windows Accounts
Each grad student is given a Windows account which can be used on all of the Windows machines attached to the Research Network. In general, this means all of the machines with names beginning with XP[ABC] (the A, B or C is a machine generation designation). (If you have another type of machine and wish similar access, please speak with either Scott Feeney or David Wiseman.) <\p>
You will be able to see your Research Network home directory from your Windows account. It will be mounted on Drive Z: and visible in Windows Explorer as 'Homes on Arion'. You can use this drive just as if it were a local disk area, dragging and dropping onto it to your heart's content.
Please remember that the Windows machines are NOT backed up so if you wish your files to be protected by our backup procedures, you should put your files in or below your Research Network home directory (the Windows Z: drive).
The Windows machines are able to access the research network's Solaris compute servers directly by using the Cygwin X Window system. There will be a 'cygwin' icon on the Windows desktop labeled 'RENT' for this purpose.
Instructions for Rebooting
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE...
DO NOT HIT THE RESET BUTTON
TO REBOOT!!
You MUST click on the shutdown button, one of which can be found on the login panel. If you're not sure where you are, type CTRL-ALT-DEL and you will be presented with a panel with a Shutdown button on it.
Account Particulars
Your Windows account name is the same as your Research Network
(algernon, brown, etc.) login id. Your initial password is set
to your Student Number. Please change your password soon.
To change your password under Windows, type
CTRL-ALT-DEL and then click on the Change Password
button and follow the instructions. Eventually you will come
back to the same panel as the CTRL-ALT-DEL brought up.
If you click on Cancel, it will restore you to your desktop
session.
If you find that you cannot get onto your account, please send e-mail to magi@csd.uwo.ca from your research network account (so that I know which loginid to check).
