- Biosketch:
- Laura Reid has worked as a lecturer in the Department of Computer Science at Western since 1998. She has taught many courses over the years, most recently focusing on core second year Software Engineering for Computer Science students, as well as the first year Computer Science course CS1033: Communications and Multimedia. Reid has been an active member of the Computer Science Outreach Committee since the day she started working at Western and has served as Chair of the committee for the last four years. She has always seen this program as a way to engage young people in science, while representing the university in the community. Besides the typical outreach activities, Reid has also organized outreach programs to encourage girls to pursue Computer Science and workshops for young indigenous people, has been involved in numerous visits to area high schools, and every summer serves as the faculty coordinator for the Computer Science summer camp for kids, Bit-By-Bit. In her new role, Reid plans to continue the lecture series, Science Here and Now, introduced last year, giving Londoners the opportunity to see some of the excellent research going on in our Faculty. She also hopes to leverage social media to open communications lines between Ontario high school teachers, guidance counselors and Western's Faculty of Science. Overall, her goal is to meet the unique outreach needs of each of the eight departments within the Faculty of Science.
