Research on common-sense thinking promises to pay off with more effective artificially intelligent systems. Terms like "denotational semantics" and "computational logic" tend to obscure the fact that my research is all about reasoning within contexts. If some statements are true only in certain situations, deductions might be made that are otherwise not possible. For example, a watchman robot guided by such common sense reasoning might use the after-five context to conclude that certain wandering humans might not be employees. Contexts can reduce the need for extensive, universal rules. Puzzles and everyday situations are used to explore the role of contexts in reasoning.
