What techniques, tools and underlying services are required to design, develop, deploy and effectively operate distributed applications in large heterogeneous distributed computing environments? My research interests center on problems arising from this broad question and on the software engineering issues associated with developing distributed applications. My current research is focused on the management of distributed applications, the services to enable their management and techniques and tools to enable developers to build manageable distributed applications. I have begun to look at policies as a means of specifying the expected operational behaviour of distributed applications and systems. This has led to research into how one might develop automatic and semi-automatic techniques for detecting policy violations (i.e. faults), for diagnosing faults and possible means of correction. Given this interest in managing distributed applications, I have begun to look into the role of management policies and services in support of key distributed applications - electronic commerce and telemedicine. I am also interested in working on software engineering problems arising the development and testing of distributed applications.
