Sequential Degrees
This section explains the options available to students who already have a prior degree, either from Western or from another accredited university.
Prior Professional Degree Students
If you have already completed a professional degree, the guidelines for obtaining a BSc in Computer Science are the same as those for Concurrent Degrees. The only difference is that the Computer Science course requirements are taken after the professional degree, rather than concurrently with the professional degree.
You would need to take all the courses that you do not already have from the following:
- the first-year courses required for admission into Computer Science
- all courses listed as principal courses in Years 2,3,4 of the Computer Science program
- any additional courses deemed necessary by the office of the Dean of Science.
The guidelines for Concurrent Degrees applyas well.
Prior Non-Professional Degree Students
A student who has a prior non-professional degree and wishes to register in a BSc program in Computer Science would follow one of two different paths, depending on the choice of second degree:
- Option 1:
-
the second degree is a general BSc in Computer Science
(three-year or four-year):
If you have taken any extra courses that were not needed for your first degree, they can be counted toward a second degree. If you have no extra courses in place, you will need to complete 15 additional courses for a three-year BSc, or 20 courses for a four-year general BSc in Computer Science.
You would have to follow the program as set out in the UWO Academic Calendar, except that:
- the Dean of Science Office would grant you permission to take senior courses, rather than more 020-level courses, to fulfill first-year requirements for the BSc in Computer Science
- if you have already taken a course that is part of the Computer Science program, you would take a different course in its place.
- Option 2:
-
the second degree is an Honours BSc in Computer Science
If your first degree was from Western:
- You would have to take at least 5.0 further courses.
-
These would include all courses that you do not already
have from the honours program requirements:
- the first-year courses required for admission into Computer Science
- all courses listed as "principal courses" in Years 2, 3, and 4 of the Honours BSc program in Computer Science.
- You would need to meet all honours program progression requirements.
If your first degree was from another accredited university:
- You would have to take at least 10.0 courses at Western.
-
These would include all courses that you do not already
have from the honours program requirements:
- the first-year courses required for admission into Computer Science
- all courses listed as "principal courses" in Years 2, 3, and 4 of the Honours BSc program in Computer Science.
- You would need to meet all honours program progression requirements.
You should have your previous courses assessed to see which courses you would need to take in order to satisfy the honours program requirements, by contacting the Computer Science Academic Counsellor and the Office of the Dean of Science.
The UWO Academic Calendar contains the guidelines for Sequential Degrees.
(Note that the Diploma in Honours Standing is discontinued, effective September 1, 2002. Students currently registered in this program must consult with the Office of the Dean of Science.)
