The Department of Computer Science at Western is one of the oldest computer science departments in North America; we were established in 1964. Our faculty has strong international and industrial links, with connections to other universities and companies in London, across North America, Europe and China. This provides opportunities for students to involve themselves in exchange programs, or engage in work with researchers in other countries.
A lot of our professors are also outstanding instructors. For example Dr. Mark Daley has won the "University Student Council's Teaching Honour Roll" award almost every year he has taught at Western. Here is a little preview of what you might see in Dr. Mark Daley's 4th year video game engine design course:
Our faculty are dedicated to achieving excellence in teaching and to achieving excellence in research, making significant contributions at research centres around the world. Meet some of our faculty:
Dr. John Barron Professor
Dr. Barron is the associate chair of Western’s Computer Science Department. His main research interests lie in Computer Vision, in particular in the measurement and interpretation of 2D and 3D image motion. He is also involved in projects concerning storm tracking in 3D Doppler radar images and 2D and 3D plant growth measurement via optical flow and range flow/range data analysis. His favourite beer is Guinness!!!
Dr. Steven Beauchemin Professor
Dr. Beauchemin's research focuses on computer vision, applied mathematics, robotics, and related applications. A winner of numerous awards, Dr. Beauchemin is also Vice President-Education for the PMI in Southwestern Ontario (http://www.pmi.org), and the CEO of PMRW Corp. a consultancy involved in providing strategic management services to the private sector.
Dr. Mahmoud El-Sakka Professor
Dr. Mahmoud El-Sakka received his PhD degree in Systems Design Engineering from University of Waterloo, 1997. His research interests include: medical imaging, digital image segmentation, digital image understanding & enhancement, & image compression. He has been a member of the Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) and a Senior Member of the Institute for Electrical and Electronic Engineers (SM-IEEE) since 1999.
Dr. Michael Katchabaw Professor
Dr. Michael Katchabaw is an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Western Ontario. His research interests include various aspects of game design and development, including character behaviour in games, storytelling in games, the use of music in games, and a variety of other areas. He has successfully led many research projects in the field of gaming, and has numerous publications in the area.
Dr. Hanan Lutfiyya Professor
"Computer Science is interdisciplinary with strong roots in engineering and mathematics and with links to many other fields including linguistics, business and psychology. I am specifically interested in developing Internet applications that are reliable. Western provides opportunities to develop exciting applications related to health-care, scientific computing and smartphones. Her favourite chocolate: "You mean I have to pick?"
Laura Reid Lecturer
"I completed all three of my degrees at Western! And after working several years in industry and teaching at a university overseas, I jumped at the chance to come back to one of Canada’s best schools. I have the privilege of teaching some of the brightest and most talented students in Canada. I love my job!"
Dr. Olga Veksler Professor
Dr. Veksler received her BSc degree in mathematics and computer science from New York University and her PhD degree from Cornell University. She is currently an assistant professor. Her research interests are energy minimization methods, graph algorithms, stereo correspondence, motion, clustering, and image segmentation.
