Due Friday, May 25, 2012 by 8:00pm
Assignment 1 --- See Details
Assignment 1 - Instructions on How to Submit your Assignment.
Optional: Download Trial version of Photoshop CS5 Extended
By downloading the Photoshop trial version it will last you for 30 days. So plan accordingly. Assignment 1 is Photoshop assignments, and Assignments 3 and 4 will require Photoshop to build the banners, and buttons etc. So it is up to you which 30 days will be of most use for you.
NOTES:
Please note that once you have downloaded the trial version the 30 days starts at that point. Also note that by uninstalling the free trial version from your system and reinstalling it again later on the same system will not work since Adobe can detect previous downloads of the same version. So be careful as to when you want the free trial version to begin.

TIPS FOR MAKING SURE THAT YOUR .JPG/.GIF/.PSD FILES ARE VIEWABLE PROPERLY FROM THE INTERNET
Once you transfer your .psd and .jpg/.gif files to the panther server, make sure that you check to see if these files are viewable from the browser such as Internet Explorer or Firefox.
Note that you should be able to see the .jpg/.gif file open up in the browser window. However, the .psd file may not open up in Firefox. But view it from Internet Explorer. When you click on the .psd file, the browser will either:
- In Firefox, it iopens up code (garbled) which is just fine. This means your .psd file will be viewable by the TA. This ensures that it is set up correctly
- In Internet Explorer it will prompt you to either open or save the file. In this case the TA marker will save the file to their system and then open it up with Photoshop in order to mark it. So watch for this option and this will ensure that you set it up correctly.
- If you get the above results, then you have uploaded your files so that they are viewable by our TA. Don't forget to submit your assignment via webct.

LATE POLICY FOR ASSIGNMENTS
- A late assignment will have a penalty of 15% of the maximum mark
for the assignment deducted for each day (at 8 p.m.) that the assignment
is late. (Saturday/Sunday count as one day for the purpose of assessing
the late penalty.)
- For example, if the assignment is due on Friday at 8pm, then
- if you hand it in on Saturday or Sunday by 8pm - penalty is 15% (remember Saturday/Sunday counts as one day for applying a late penalty)
- if you hand it in on Monday by 8pm - penalty is 30%
- if you hand it in on Tuesday by 8pm - penalty is 45%
- An assignment that is more than three days late will not be accepted.
- No extensions will be given for assignments. However, in the event of serious
medical or compassionate grounds, a student should take supporting
documentation to the office of the Dean of their faculty, who will contact
the instructor. Workload, exams, minor illnesses, and home computer
problems are NOT valid excuses for being unable to complete an assignment
within the allotted time. The lecturer will only accept notices from a
student's Dean's Office if student has a valid reason for handing in an
assignment late. THE STUDENT MUST
NOT GO TO THE LECTURER with his/her documentation, but
instead he/she must see the Dean's Office and the Dean's Office will
notify the lecturer. Upon notification from the Dean's Office, the
lecturer will move the weight of the assignment/lab onto the exam or the major
assignment.
ASSIGNMENT BACKUPS
It is your responsibility to keep up-to-date backups of assignment disk files
in case of system crashes or inadvertently erased files. Keep disk copies of
all material handed in, as well as the actual graded assignment, to guard
against the possibility of lost assignments or errors in recording marks.
ASSIGNMENT MARKING
- Assignments will be marked by the TA's, usually within 1 week of the due date. Marks and comments will be returned to students via Webct. You are responsible for checking your assignment mark in Webct. YOU HAVE TWO WEEKS TO CHECK YOUR GRADE AFTER IT HAS BEEN POSTED ON WEBCT. Any requests for mark adjustments after those two weeks will not be granted and the mark will be considered final.
- You should direct any questions about the marking of the assignment to your lecturer. NOTE: if you request a remark because you disagree with one portion of the mark, the lecturer will remark the ENTIRE assignment and you may end up with a lower mark that you were given by the TA. initially. If this occurs, the mark given by the lecturer will stand and you will have no recourse to go back to the original mark.
- A small portion of the mark may be subjective, for example:
creativity. This part of the mark is at the discretion of the marker and
will not be adjusted after the mark is given
- A request for an adjustment in an assignment mark must be made within 2 weeks from the time that it has been returned to you. All assignment marks are considered to be final after that date.
- The marks for all assignments will be posted by the end of the term; it is your responsibility to ensure that the marks posted are correct, and if not, report it to your course instructor.
WARNING --> PLEASE READ
- Every effort will be made to return the mark for your assignment to you within one week after the assignment due date. You have TWO weeks from when you received the mark to ask for a remark. NO REMARKS WILL BE GIVEN AFTER THOSE TWO WEEKS ARE OVER. It is YOUR responsibility to check the grade sheet returned to you via webct with your assignment and to check a mark was given for the assignment and to email your instructor if there is a problem with the mark.
- If for any reason the assignment schedule given above cannot be adhered to, the assignment marks will be pro-rated. (The 3 assignments are worth 25 % of the overall mark for the course.
- NOTE: To be eligible to pass the course, a student must obtain a weighted average of at least 45% on the major assignment and final exams and the weighted average of the assignment marks must be at least 45 %.
Note that weighted average = (total of weighted marks / sum of weights) and weighted mark = (weight * mark)
ASSIGNMENT MARKING
- Assignments will be marked by the TA's and the mark and marked sheet will be posted under Webct.
- You should direct any questions about marking to your course instructor.
- A small portion of the mark may be subjective, for example: creativity. This part of the mark is at the discretion of the marker and will not be adjusted after the mark is given.

TUTORING
- The role of tutoring is to help students understand course material. Tutors should not write part or all of an assignment for the students who hire them. Having employed the same tutor as another student is not a legitimate defense against an accusation of collusion, should two students hand in assignments judged similar beyond the possibility of coincidence.
