CS 390y - Industry Internship

Course Description

This course is available only to students who have completed a departmentally approved industry internship. Each student enrolled in the course will give a twenty-minute presentation and write a report of ten to fifteen pages on some aspect of their internship experience.

CS 390y is a full-year half course. However, because there is no lecture material, students have the freedom to choose to complete the report and presentation requirements by due dates (given below) in November, January, or March. Students are expected to attend each other's talks. Outside students, such as aspiring internship students, may also be invited to these talks.

Email Contact

• The course coordinator will occasionally need to send email messages to the whole class or to individual students. Email will be sent to your GAUL email address. You must make sure that you read your GAUL email on a frequent and regular basis, or have it forwarded to an alternative email address if you prefer to read it there.

Lectures

• Classes will be held during the first two weeks, to discuss the reports and presentations.
• After the first two lectures, classes will be held only when the course coordinator has sent an email notice to the students by noon of the previous Friday.
• In the January term, the class time will have to change, because the course coordinator has a teaching conflict.
• Presentations will be booked around class times during the fall term, and at a time when the majority of students can attend during the winter term. Students are expected to attend each other's talks.

Reports and Presentations

• You will give a twenty-minute presentation (followed by a question and answer period) and write a report of ten to fifteen pages, on some aspect of your internship experience.  (Your report and presentation may deal with different topics.)
• Your written report is due at the same time as your presentation.
• Outlines for your report and presentation must be emailed to the course coordinator for approval, at least two weeks before your presentation date. 
• Detailed specifications for the reports and presentations will be provided in the first two classes and on the course web page.
• The decision on the timing of your presentation/report (November, January, or March) must be communicated to the course coordinator by October 10 so that suitable accommodations can be booked for the presentations.
• Students are expected to conduct themselves honorably. Plagiarism will not be tolerated.

Course Dates

• Tuesday September 9 and 16, 2003 : classes
• Friday October 10, 2003 : By this date, let coordinator know when you will be doing your presentation.
• Report and Presentation: Choose one of the following dates:
  (The presentations may have to be scheduled over several hours or even several days, depending on how many students choose the same time period.)
  
  • Tuesday November 18 (Tuesday November 25 will also be used if Nov. 18 fills up)
  • end of January (exact date to be determined)
  • end of March (exact date to be determined)

          Student Evaluation

• Written Report: 45%
  Presentation: 45%
  Class Participation: 10%
• Marking:
  • The mark for the written report will be based on content, structure, and style (including grammar and spelling).
  • The mark for the presentation will be based on content and quality of presentation.
  • Students are expected to attend each other's talks, and to ask questions and participate in discussion after the presentation. The class participation mark will be based on this.
  • More details on marking will be provided in the first two classes and on the course web page.
• Internship Information Sessions: During the fall term, the Computer Science Department will conduct a number of information sessions for students interested in going on internships. Input from students who have completed internships is valued at these sessions. Class members who participate effectively in the information seminars can earn 10% toward their final grade, and can reduce the weight accorded to either the final report or the presentation, whichever earns the lower mark, to 35%.
