Think of your report as the kind of document you yourself would have
found helpful when you were trying to decide whether or not to go on an Internship, and
that would prepare you for what you might expect during an Internship.
Format
Your written report should be 10 to 15 pages long, double spaced.
Marks will be given for the report format, writing style, and for
correct grammar and spelling.
Note that it is a "formal" report, so avoid
jargon, slang, and excessive use of abbreviations and acronyms.
There is no required organization of topics in your
written report ( you may all have a different
approach). However, here is a sample organization of a report:
Introduction
About yourself -- why you chose internship
Company overview, work environment
Technical description of work done
How UWO prepared you for internship (see below)
Conclusions
The report should have a title page and headings for
the subtopics of discussion.
Content
Your report will address your internship experience, from
whatever viewpoint you wish to discuss it. However, it is suggested that you
organize your report into subtopics of discussion, rather than
submit a "diary" of your internship.
Suggested topic(s): You could base
your whole report
on one of the following topics, or combine several or all of them in your report:
- discussion of the project(s) you were working on (a technical overview, or what you
learned, etc.)
- discussion of your job environment (people, software, etc.)
- internship issues and recommendations
An outline of the topics for your report must be
emailed to the course coordinator for approval, at least two weeks before
your presentation date.
UWO courses: Your report should also relate your internship to your experience at
Western: discuss what courses were useful to you, which courses would have been
useful had you taken them beforehand, what aspects of your jobs helped you when you
returned to school, etc.
Note that we reserve the right to quote brief passages from your
report, for advertising for Industry Internship. We will clear it with you first, of
course.
Presentation
Goal
Your presentation is meant to enlighten your classmates and the
course coordinator on some aspect of your internship experience. Aim for an interesting
and informative presentation!
Format
Your presentation will be approximately 20 minutes long, followed by
10 minutes for a question-and-answer session.
All presentations will be held in a room with data projection
facilities. Your presentation may use overheads, or PowerPoint, etc.
Marking will be based on what the presentation is about (is it
interesting? informative?), the quality of the presentation (is it well prepared?), and
how questions are fielded after the presentation.
Content
Your presentation will address your internship experience, from
whatever viewpoint you wish to discuss it. As with the written report, it is
suggested that you organize your presentation into subtopics of
discussion, rather than present a "diary" of your internship.
Suggested topic(s): same as report topics
Note that your report and presentation do not need to be on the same
topic, but may be. However, your presentation must not be just a reading
or rehash of your report.
An outline of the topics for your presentation must
be emailed to the course coordinator for approval, at least two weeks before
your presentation date.
