BIOLOGICAL INVENTORY OF A'NOWAGHI

(DRAFT DOCUMENT)

The following document captures the state of our broadband biosurvey as of August 14 1999.

Entries are divided into five kingdoms, Monera, Fungi (& Lichens), Protista, Plantae and Animalia. Within kingdoms, entries are arranged taxonomically by phylum, class, order, and family with some exceptions. For example, in Kingdom Plantae, there no generally agreed upon orders, so the classification jumps directly from class to family.

Each entry has three parts: common name (where applicable), scientific name, and collection data. The latter data consist of a location acronym, a collector/observer's acronym, and the date. (See end of this document for the acronym glossary.) In some cases various components of these data are missing, as they have not all been filled in from field notes. (This is a draft document, after all.) In some cases there are two names separated by a slash. The first name is the person who collected or observed the species in question (usually an amateur) and the second name is that of an expert who either verified that particular specimen or found another on another occasion.

Species identifications were carried as far as possible in all cases, most often right to species, but sometimes stopping short at genus or family. We count a species as "identified" if its taxonomic staus has been determined at least to genus. Species or genus names in square brackets indicate a degree of uncertainty about the taxon in question relative to a given specimen. It represents the best guess, given the reference materials available. The final document will include a complete list of references used, except for the identifications made by experts.

We have thus been able to distinguish species without always being able to identify them. Within the context of each relevant taxonomic group, it is often possible, with a little experience, to know when you are looking at a different species. Such species are counted as "examined" and their field characters are listed in our files.
