Miscellaneous Stuff
I usually say that I am "90 percent vegetarian". When I am
choosing for only myself, I either eat vegetarian food or fish.
However, I don't impose my choices on other people, so when I am
visiting others or sharing food with others at a restaurant, I
don't insist on vegetarian. (Basically I do what I do as a
protest against the meat production industry, which I find
unethical and wasteful.)
I am against advertising on Usenet and unsolicited
mass e-mail. See the web site for the
Coalition Against Unsolicited
Commercial E-mail (CAUCE) for more details.
I believe that the Canadian Senate should be replaced by
a body which is more credible and designed to represent the
provinces and regions at the national level in legislative and
constitutional matters. In particular, I believe:
- The number of senators per province and
territory should be somewhere in-between equal number
per province and by proportion of population.
- In voting for Senators, voters should cast a vote for a
provincial party. The number of senators elected for each party
should be based on the proportion of the vote the party obtains
("proportional representation"). The actual senators named
should be chosen by the parties concerned. This would minimize
the amount of federal political party influence over the Senate.
- The group of senators from each province should have a
limited power of veto over bills and constitutional amendments.
I may put more details about a scheme of this kind in here sometime.
Of course none of this will ever happen because the current
(appointed) senators just want to keep their jobs as they are
now, and the provincial and federal politicians want the
Senate abolished so they can divvy up the rest of the power.
