Charles X. Ling, PhD (U Penn), Professor Director, Data Mining and Business Intelligence Lab Associate Scientist, Lawson Health Research Institute Summary: Charles X. Ling earned his dual-BSc (CS and EE) from Shanghai Jiao Tong Univ in China, and both of his MSc and PhD from Computer and Information Science at Univ of Pennsylvania within four years. Since then he has been a faculty member in Computer Science at Western University. Charles aims at developing intelligences in computers and in children. He strives to answer the following interrelated questions: How to program computers to learn and improve automatically (machine learning) How to apply machine learning to business, Internet, and so on (data mining, big data analytics) How to use computers to model human behaviors (cognitive science), and how to effectively teach children thinking strategies using research results from AI and cognitive science (child education)

Charles is an expert in machine learning, data mining, big data analytics, and their applications in Internet, business, health science and so on.

• He was/is an Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering (IEEE TKDE), ACM Transactions on Intelligent Systems and Technology (ACM TIST), and Computational Intelligence Journal.
• He is a Senior Member of IEEE, and Lifetime Member of AAAI.
• As the Director of Data Mining and Business Intelligence Lab at UWO, he is leading data mining research and projects (see pictures of his group) on CRM (Customer Relationship Management), direct marketing, search engine, action mining, Bioinformatics, and so on. He has extensive industrial experience with Microsoft Research, London Life of Canada, Sun Microsystems, Royal Bank of Canada, and so on.

Charles is also a specialist in child education

• He integrates his research in AI and cognitive science, and develops a full range of thinking strategies that improve children's intellectual abilities. These thinking strategies embrace, enhance, and connect with math, science, and other areas.
• He develops "Power Thinking with Dr. Ling", a video-based program that teaches thinking strategies to elementary-school students. The program has been approved by Curriculum Services Canada, and licensed in hundreds of elementary schools in Ontario, Canada.
