WIA '98 Conference:
Second Call
Program
Transportation and Accomodation
Registration
September 17-19, 1998
Automata theory is the cornerstone of computer science theory. While there is much practical experience with using automata, this work is spread across diverse areas, including parsing, computational linguistics, speech recognition, text searching, device controllers, distributed systems, and protocol analysis. Consequently, techniques that have been discovered in one area may not be known in another. In addition, there is a growing number of symbolic manipulation environments designed to assist researchers in experimenting with and teaching about automata and their implementation; examples include FLAP, FADELA, AMORE, FireLite, Automate, AGL, Turing's World, FinITE, INR, and Grail. Developers of such systems have not had a forum in which to expose and compare their work. The purpose of this workshop is to bring together members of the academic, research, and industrial community who have an interest in implementing automata, to demonstrate their work and to explain the problems they have been solving. This is the third workshop on this topic; the first ones have been held in London, Ontario, Canada.
The Call
We solicit papers (and demos) on all aspects of implementing automata, including but not limited to:
- Browsing automata
- Complexity of automata operations
- Compilers and automata
- Concurrency and automata
- Data structure design for automata
- Design and architecture of automata software

- Editors and automata
- Experimental studies and practical experiences
- Industrial applications and automata
- Natural language processing and automata
- Networks and automata
- New algorithms for manipulating automata
- Speech and speaker recognition and automata
- Standards for representation, testing, and comparison of software
- Symbolic manipulation environments for automata
- Teaching and automata
- Techniques for graphical display of automata
- VLSI and automata
When and where to submit
Authors are requested to submit six copies of an extended abstract before APRIL 15, 1998.
An extended abstract should start with the title, each author's name, affiliation, and e-mail address, and a one-paragraph summary of the results and ideas to:
Jean-Marc Champarnaud
WIA 98
Laboratoire d'Informatique
UFR des Sciences et des Techniques
Universite de Rouen
F-76821 Mont-Saint-Aignan Cedex France
The extended abstract should provide sufficient detail to allow the Program Committee to evaluate its validity, quality, and relevance to the Workshop. The extended abstract should be at most ten (10) pages long using 11-point font with ample margins.
Authors will be notified of acceptance or rejection by JUNE 5, 1998.
Final copies of accepted papers must be submitted by JULY 3, 1998. We expect the proceedings to appear in the Springer-Verlag Lecture Notes in Computer Science Series after the Workshop. We will distribute preliminary versions of the papers for participants at the Workshop.
Demos
We also encourage the submission of software demos. Developers wishing to demonstrate their software should submit a two-page description, to the preceding address before APRIL 15, 1998, outlining the design of their system and their computing needs (if any).WIA '98 Programme Committee
