The Faculty of Science at Western University is pleased to announce a search for a Tier I Canada Research Chair in Complex Systems Modeling and Analysis tenured position at the rank of Associate Professor or full Professor. . The rank will be commensurate with the successful applicant’s qualifications and experience. The successful candidate will be an expert in the development and use of models and analytical tools to study and quantify patterns and processes of the environment, ecosystems, adaptation, as well as monitoring and protection of biota and natural resources. The successful candidate will be jointly appointed to the Department of Biology and either the Department of Computer Science or Statistical and Actuarial Sciences with a start date of July 1, 2015.
In order to participate in Western’s exciting new initiatives in the area of Big Data, the successful candidate will have extensive experience in the development and application of statistical or computational methodologies that utilize large scale quantitative data sets to address questions involving complex systems, including in application areas at Western. Researchers at Western address a wide range of globally-relevant environmental and biological questions. Many take empirical approaches in the field, lab, and intermediate scales in Western’s unique meso-scale experimental facilities such as the Biotron (www.thebiotron.ca), the Advanced Facility for Avian Research (AFAR; www.birds.uwo.ca/AFAR/), and WindEEE Dome (www.eng.uwo.ca/windeee/). The ability to effectively collect, analyze and model quantitative information, often in real time, is essential to the success of this research. Western’s researchers are also supported by the world-class computational infrastructure of Sharcnet and SOSCIP.
In accordance with the regulations set for Tier 1 Canada Research Chairs (www.chairs-chaires.gc.ca), the successful candidate will be an outstanding and innovative researcher whose accomplishments are recognized globally for having made a major impact in their field as evidenced by recognition in influential publications in top tier international journals, impact on government policy, and active membership on advisory boards and international panels and/or editorship on major journals. Demonstrated success in attracting high levels of external funding, in particular through large, multidisciplinary team-based projects, is essential. An excellent communicator with an established record as a keynote presenter at national and international conferences, the successful candidate will also have a superior record of attracting and supervising graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, developing timely graduate and undergraduate courses and providing leadership in research, interdisciplinary scholarship, as well as increasing knowledge mobilization and societal benefits.
